Why you need flood insurance.
Since 1968, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was set up by the government to offer flood insurance to homeowners, vendors, and business owners who reside in communities designated as prone to flooding, and who participate in the program and take certain steps to prevent flooding in the area.
Having flood insurance is not mandatory if the area is not located in a flood zone, as designated by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This is the case in most of the Coachella Valley, which means many homeowners were unprepared for recent storms.
What flood insurance covers.
Flood insurance covers rebuilding costs up to $250,000 and loss of possessions up to $100,000, with more coverage available for higher value homes.
FEMA sometimes offers low-cost loans to aid in repairs and helps fill the gaps for what your insurance covers, but it is a loan and required to be paid back. As the recent flooding in the area proved, however, carrying adequate insurance is the best way to recover and move on with your life in the case of a flood.
How to get flood insurance.
To buy flood insurance, you must work with an agent who is an active member of the NFIP.
