Over the 4th of July holiday, a pair of earthquakes had all of Southern California in a tailspin. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake, hit Ridgecrest on Thursday afternoon on July 4, 2019, followed by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake the following evening.
The earthquakes caused multiple fires and damage to several homes, leaving many people wondering if they should have prepared better. People frequently ask when preparing for earthquakes, “Will I be covered if my home endures damage from an earthquake?” and “Is earthquake damage covered under my standard homeowners policy?”
Almost all standard home insurance policies do not cover damage caused by earthquakes and earthquake insurance must be purchased separately. Typically, a standard homeowners policy will cover fire damage (which could be due to an earthquake). Living in the Coachella Valley where the San Andreas Fault calls home, the fear of the ‘Big One’ is always prevalent. For example, just last week we had a 4.2 earthquake occur right outside of Twentynine Palms. Because of this, It is important to know exactly what your homeowners policy covers and properly prepare yourself for an earthquake.
