Parents, it’s that time of year again. You’re gearing up to send your kids back to school. From clothing to school supplies to dorm room essentials, you have covered everything on your list… or so you thought. If you have a child attending college this year, we understand how stressful this time can be, and we want to make this transition for your family as smooth as possible. We encourage you to add insurance to your list of essentials to have and to understand before your child leaves back to school. Below are a few items to consider in terms of insurance advice for college students.
- Check your personal property coverage to ensure your child’s belongings in their dorm room will still be covered in case of theft or property damage (fire, earthquake, etc). Typically, most homeowners policies will cover 10 percent of personal property damage for college students who still fall under their parents’ homeowners insurance but are not living at home.
- If your child lives off campus, you may want to consider renters insurance to cover their personal belongings that may not be covered by the landlords insurance in case of theft or damaged property.
- If your child is taking their car with them to school, most often their car will be covered under your insurance policy. However, in some cases your car insurance won’t cover your child’s car if they are attending school in a particular state or location. Double check that their car will be covered under your policy while they are away.
- If your child is not taking a car with them to school, but plans on driving your car while they are home for the weekend or for holiday breaks, they need to remain listed on your auto policy.
