An extra layer of liability.
When it rains it pours.
The old saying about how “when it rains, it pours,” is common in the insurance world, too. Even when you have great home, property, and business insurance, there are many circumstances when you need the extra liability insurance offered by an umbrella policy to protect your assets. In our litigious society where large verdicts are not uncommon and where legal bills can devastate you, you cannot protect yourself too much.

What does umbrella liability insurance cover?
The limits on these umbrella insurance policies are $1 million or more, much higher than the limits on other policies you are apt to have. The policy provides coverage in four major areas:
- Bodily injuries that might result from auto accidents, slip and fall cases on your property, dog bites, and other such circumstances.
- Damage to property as a result of such events as auto accidents, damage your child does to school property, or accidentally damaging a friend’s valuable Picasso or Oriental rug.
- Lawsuits when you are sued for slander, libel, false arrest, malicious prosecution, mental anguish or other personal liability situation.
- Personal liability cases where someone holds you personally accountable for an injury, such as when you are a landlord.
All these policies are usually written separately from other coverage you may have; some companies that offer this type of insurance can provide it as an add-on to your existing policies.
Do you need an umbrella insurance quote?
Anybody could get into a situation where umbrella coverage is crucial. For example, if you have a car accident that injures a doctor or a highly paid executive in the other car, you may be sued exorbitant amounts for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and a host of other damages. An excess liability policy would protect your assets. The more assets you have to protect, the more concerned you should be about buying this type of coverage.
